The steps of strangers

                                 Trace the steps of mine

                                 Here on the cracked

                                 Pavements of the city

 

                                 Sidewalk. These pavements

                                 Have seen deliberate steps

                                 Carefree steps and hurried

                                 Or forgotten steps. Once

 

                                 A younger man

                                 I stepped indeliberately.

                                 Eager for my life

                                 I hurried out.

 

                                 Steps

                                 Leading everywhere.

                                 Anywhere.

                                 Each unplanned

                                 Each unremembered

 

                                 The steps of whom

                                 Now trace the steps of mine.

                                 These steps.

                                 The city remembers.
